1. Have at least four adults there, if your party has twelve kids. Any more will require more. Try to keep one adult per every three kids. Make sure that there are both male and female chaperones keeping an eye on everyone.
2. Play safe games. No spin the bottle. There are plenty of other games that don’t require smooching. Perhaps this seems a bit medieval, but you never know what can happen at a party, even with adult supervision.
3. Make boundaries clear. Make sure that the kids know that boys and girls are not allowed in the bathrooms together. If you have an upstairs, let the opposite gender know they are not allowed up there, or you can seal it off completely. If you live in a one story house, then let them know the boundary on the bottom floor.
Other than that, make sure they’re having fun! There’s nothing wrong with being cautious when throwing a boy-girl sweet sixteen. After all, teenagers don’t necessarily do “bad things” like drugs, drink, etc, but in the heat of the moment, you never know what can happen. It’s better to keep things safe for all parties involved. 1. Do your research. Maybe the decade in which your child wants as their party’s theme had a certain ritual for a person’s sweet sixteen. See what you can dig up and talk to them about incorporating it. Say for example, one ritual was to give them a thimble or pocket watch, or something like that. Then you could give them a special thimble or pocket watch to add the authenticity.
2. See what the dress looked like. See if you can adapt it to more modern times. If your kid wants a Victorian age themed party, they probably don’t want to wear underwear as thick as three outfits, for example. However, you could buy a petticoat or two to add a little bit of authenticity, and keep it somewhat comfortable.
3. You can also try to see what snacks were popular during that decade. It might take a wee bit of work on your part, but you can always get your child to pitch in! It is their party after all. See what authentic recipes you can find.
4. If you want, your child can learn a dance from that period and teach it to the guests. Then they can either continue it or bust out into something more modern. After all, you don’t HAVE to follow all of the rules!
